Marineland of Canada opened in 1961, near Niagara Falls and is a commonly known tourist attraction. They introduced their orca whale breeding program around the same time as the opening of the amusement park, but in March of this year, Marineland announced that they are discontinuing their program and that this generation of orca’s will be the last. This is because of a 6 year battle with animal rights activists like PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) who like other people watched the 2013 film Blackfish. Blackfish demonstrated the abuse that the orca whales face in the confines of Marineland. Although the orca breeding program has been discontinued, there are still several animals suffering from abuse under the constraints of Marineland. They cannot communicate their rights to us so it is important that people fight for them.
